Interview Tips

First Impressions Count

Dress for a business meeting – smart, clean and tidy. Shirt and tie, preferably suit, for men. Smart trousers or skirt and blouse, or suit for women. Make sure your hair and nails are clean. Greet everyone – the receptionist, your interviewer – politely and confidently, with a smile and a handshake.

Use the Job Description

Use the job description to identify relevant experience from your work history. These roles should, preferably, already have been listed in a CV. Write them down as crib notes for the interview if necessary.

Ensure you know, at the very least:

What your prospective employer does; who its customers are; and who its competitors are. Study the company’s website; request a catalogue or brochure; be aware of recent developments. SHOW AN INTEREST!

Take copies of this information with you, together with a copy of your CV and a list of questions you would like to ask, in a smart folder or binder. Asking questions shows the interviewer(s) you have done your research and that you are keen. Excellent queries include: ‘What is a typical day like?’ ‘What are the most difficult areas of the job?’ ‘What are the promotion prospects?’ ‘What training is offered?’

Preparation also means – making sure you know exactly where the company is, the full address and how you will get there. Leave yourself plenty of time for the journey. If possible take a mobile phone in case the worst happens – a professional candidate will call ahead if they expect to be late.

During the Interview

Keep your answers relevant and remember to use the examples you have prepared. Most interviews are nothing more than an informal discussion so that the company can find out more about you. Smile and do have some eye contact with your interviewer – they are probably just as nervous as you!
