CV Writing Tips
MAKE SURE work history is consistent and consecutive, detailing all dates.
TWEAK YOUR CV! Make it relevant to the position you are applying for, e.g. for a position as a customer service advisor – detail all relevant customer facing experience you may have. Make sure the information regarding your recent history is snappy, informative
and RELEVANT!
DON’T ASSUME! Detail the nature of your current employer’s business and the contribution you make to it.
TRANSLATE YOUR ROLE to the direct benefits to your company and, consequently the potential benefits to any subsequent employer. Any potential employer will attempt to see what value he/she will gain by engaging you. Take ownership! It suggests accountability, stability and reliability.
PROMOTE YOURSELF! COMPETE FOR THE POSITION!
- DON'T SAY... ‘Responsible for the processing of over 1000 invoices weekly and I undertake additional credit control duties.’ Yawn!
- DO SAY... ‘I take personal responsibility for billing out and for the timely recovery of monies due. My approach balances meeting my employer’s strict terms whilst maintaining the professional rapport that our working relationships depend on.’
- DON'T SAY... ‘As a Customer Service Advisor, I am responsible for taking over 500 calls per day…’
- DO SAY... ‘I am committed to providing a high level of service to our customers - I view providing satisfaction and contributing to the company’s success as an intrinsic aspect of my role.’
POINTS WORTH REMEMBERING...
Graduates who are applying for their first full-time position may find it a benefit to prospective employers to list areas/modules studied during their degree course.
It is a good idea to give a brief summary of yourself – your qualities and aspirations, especially if you are re-skilling, returning to work or looking for your first position.
