'Space Race' Success

Published: December 2007

The inaugural Relay Recruitment 'bounceathon' fundraiser for the National Autistic Society in Roundhay Park, Leeds, drew several hundred spectators, who watched some 60 'hopper jockeys' bounce a 200m circuit, then carry their mounts for nine further laps.

With over £1,500 of the eventual £2,000 goal raised on the day, we are confident of easily achieving the targeted amount. In addition, many thousands more are expected through future Space Hopper events, including one planned for Central Park next year or in 2009.

Managing director, Steven Street, admitted to being taken aback at the first bounceathon's popularity. He said: "The enthusiasm for our 'space race' has really bowled me over. We didn't think the 60 Space Hoppers we brought along would all be used, yet we had enough potential riders for twice that many.

"People came along from across the North and while it was a fun event, it was also a gruelling 2000m challenge, which everybody taking part managed to complete - although some were quicker than others!"
