Relay bucks the trend

As the recruitment sector’s severe downturn deepens, Relay Recruitment has announced that operating profits have risen 37 per cent, while fee income in the first quarter of the current year is up 54 per cent on the same period last year.

nov02d4.jpgThe news comes just as the company embarks on an ambitious branch expansion programme, which was spearheaded recently by the launch of prestigious new premises in Leeds.

Relay, which works across all industries and hopes to boost performance further with the introduction of a raft of unique initiatives such as its Golden Hello and Goodbye scheme. This is particularly useful for legal and accounting sectors, where skill shortages are acute.

The company attributes its growth to a simple strategy of studying, then not repeating, the mistakes and bad practice of others. Managing Director, Steven Street, says, “We have always held the belief that a recruitment practice should aspire to be regarded as just as much a professional service provider as solicitors, accountants and architects.

“As such, we take the time to forge long-term relationships with clients – who are always referred to as ‘partners’; we won’t pitch for the lowest rates, because that means we can’t attract the best staff; and while there is no regulation demanding recruitment practitioners to attain professional qualifications, all our consultants must do so.”

Constant innovation, an investment in technology and staff personal development programmes are seen as key to ongoing success as the company rolls out across the North.
